About

Khushi Patel is a senior neuroscience major at the University of Illinois Chicago, pursuing double minors in human nutrition and chemistry. Originally from India, she moved to the United States during her senior year of high school and now resides in Oak Forest, Illinois with her family. As a first-generation college student, Khushi is deeply committed to expanding mentorship access and building inclusive communities.

On campus, she serves as Founder and President of First Gen Pre Meds and the Red Cross at UIC, President of the Student Nutrition Association, and holds executive board positions in UNICEF, MAPS, and SASA. Beyond her leadership roles, Khushi conducts neurological research and works as an EMT, further demonstrating her dedication to healthcare and service. She plans to pursue a career in medicine centered on service and health equity.

Khushi believes that student engagement creates spaces where students feel seen, supported, and empowered. Through her own experiences, she found community among like-minded peers while also helping underclassmen navigate challenges she once faced as a first-generation student. By founding First Gen Pre Meds, she created a space to ensure that no student feels lost or alone in the pre-med journey. She sees engagement as a way to foster advocacy, compassion, integration, and curiosity—values that strengthen both individuals and the broader campus community.

She views UIC as a place that represents resilience, diversity, and opportunity. Its strong connection to the city of Chicago and commitment to serving diverse communities resonated deeply with her values. At UIC, she found an environment where leadership and service are not only encouraged but expected, allowing her to transform her lived experiences into meaningful impact.

Through her leadership experiences, Khushi has expanded her education beyond academics by strengthening her advocacy skills, compassion, and ability to connect across communities. Mentoring peers, organizing events, and collaborating with various organizations have taught her how to turn ideas into action and build inclusive spaces that uplift others. These experiences have deepened her understanding of community responsibility and enriched her academic journey with purpose.

One of Khushi’s most meaningful experiences came during an involvement fair, when an underclassman shared that First Gen Pre Meds was exactly what she had been searching for. Hearing how the organization could support another first-generation student reminded Khushi of her own journey and validated her efforts in creating a space for others. It reinforced the impact of her work and the importance of building supportive communities.

After graduation, Khushi plans to pursue a post-baccalaureate program at UIC, obtain her paramedic license, and apply to medical school. Her ultimate goal is to become a surgeon specializing in neurological, vascular, or trauma surgery, combining technical excellence with compassionate, patient-centered care.
