The Flames Service Day (previously the Welcome Service Project) is an annual event for the UIC community, specifically helping connect incoming first year and transfer students to current students and staff as well as serving the surrounding UIC community. Occurring the Friday of the first week of the fall semester, the project gives students an opportunity to provide service as a group, meet new people and form friendships, build a UIC community, and kick off their journey to becoming an active citizen.

Feel free to SIGN UP and join us for this year's Flames Service Day.  The deadline to register is 10am on Wednesday, August 23rd.

The 2021 Welcome Service Project took place at two sites, the Roosevelt Square Urban Farm with Urban Growers Collective, and with UCAN at their North Lawndale campus. Over 25 UIC students and staff volunteered on the Friday before the fall semester began, and students were able to make a different with two incredible Chicago organizations while also getting to know their UIC peers.

Our Annual Welcome Service Project event is catered for incoming first year and transfer students. Before the start of the fall semester, the project gives students an opportunity to provide service as a group, build a UIC community, and kick off their journey to becoming an active citizen. This year, students were able to volunteer in neighborhoods surrounding UIC to clean up trash throughout multiple Chicago Parks.

As the COVID-19 crisis hit the UIC community in early March of 2020, Student Leadership and Civic Engagement reevaluated our Weeks of Welcome service project to ensure the safety of all our volunteers. While our volunteers helped clean up trash in Chicago Parks, they wore face masks and social distanced themselves with ease.

Even though the pandemic limited the number of volunteers we could bring with us, we still had 13 amazing volunteers who participated in our event!

It was an honor to see how proactive our incoming first years and transfer students were and we welcome them to our UIC community!

The Welcome Service Project is an annual event for incoming first year and transfer students. UIC community, and kick off their journey to becoming an active citizen. It is a great opportunity for students new to UIC to explore the community through volunteer work.

In 2019, we worked with UCAN painting a mural on their campus. We are proud to say, in only one day, we were able to finish our mural! Our volunteers got creative and formed lasting relationships amongst each other.

UCAN serves and impacts over 21,000 at-risk children, youth and families across Illinois and we were happy to be of service. We would like to thank all our participants who volunteered and made a difference within the UIC community.

Check out the amazing artwork done by 23 volunteers who wanted to brighten up the UCAN campus below.
